Willem is a retired barrister, who practiced in Brisbane, Australia until 30 June 2025.

Willem joined the Queensland Bar in March 2010, after relocating from Cape Town, South Africa where he practiced as an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa and member of the Cape Bar Association since June 2003.
